Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is seeking to hire an Internal Auditor Trainee will conduct external audits of simple areas as well as segments of complex areas.

Essential Functions

  • Receives working assignments designed to develop knowledge, understanding, and practical skills of auditing.
  • Receives on the job training to learn the skills needed to perform specialized professional and analytical reviews and audits of systems to determine if policies and programs are efficiently and economically administered and if program requirements and objectives are being effectively fulfilled.
  • Receives on the job training to learn how to organize and index work papers to support findings and recommendations and to facilitate easy reference.
  • Receives on the job training to learn the skills needed to review audit comments and incorporates them into the final report.
  • Drives and/or travels to audit sites to perform audits and receive on the job training to achieve skills to conduct audit field work.
  • Attends training classes provided by the agency.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in the field of accounting, fiscal administration or finance.
  • Qualifying State employees in the Upward Mobility Program shall have the stated requirements of this classification waived by successful completion of specific proficiency tests and training programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers elementary knowledge of auditing theories and procedures.
  • Prefers elementary knowledge of government contract cost principles.
  • Prefers knowledge of current workplace technologies, including data analysis tools, spreadsheets, and audit software.
  • Prefers the ability to learn and apply state laws, statutory mandates, administrative rules, regulations, policies and procedures when auditing an agency’s functions and programs.
  • Prefers the ability to perform duties in a professional, efficient and ethical manner and to maintain the confidentiality of the information gathered during an audit.
  • Prefers the ability to prepare clear, accurate, and well-organized audit documentation and written reports, in accordance with established standards and guidelines.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires valid driver’s license.
  • Frequent travel with some overnight stays.
  • Ability to move or lift files and audit cases weighing approximately 25 – 30 pounds.
  • Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
