With over 50 economists and 200 economics and government reporters worldwide, Bloomberg has an outstanding capacity to explain where the world is economically and politically, where it might be heading, and the ways in which economic and geopolitical forces interact.
Bloomberg Economics already offers a comprehensive macroeconomic research service for Terminal subscribers. That includes detailed forecasts, supported by thorough and original thematic research.
As a next step, we are expanding our geoeconomics research and building out our global coverage of key regions, from Latin America to the Asia-Pacific. The goal is to offer Bloomberg clients a deeper insight into the themes that drive economics, markets, and policy.
We are seeking a summer research intern for the geoeconomics team. The position is based in Washington, DC or New York City and runs for 10 weeks.
THE ROLE
The successful candidate will work with Bloomberg’s chief geoeconomics analyst and other members of the team on research projects aimed at helping our clients understand the interplay of geopolitics and economics across key regions and issue areas, including critical and emerging technology, economic statecraft, and military and defense.
Specific projects may include:
- Writing or contributing to short-turnaround pieces on geopolitical events with economic implications, from major elections to the outbreak of conflict.
- Building or contributing to data sets and models that explore geopolitical dynamics or the intersection of geopolitics and economics. This may include using alternative/web data sources and programmatic methods to visualize and analyze complex relationships.
- Writing or contributing to larger papers or series of papers within the team’s remit.
This internship will offer the opportunity to develop Bloomberg product knowledge, learn about our clients and their needs, build relationships through the company, deepen subject-matter expertise, and sharpen writing, research, and critical thinking skills.
The program will include the opportunity to attend Bloomberg Speaker Series sessions with company leaders and the opportunity to participate in community service projects and other intern events while networking with fellow interns and employees.
Throughout the internship, you will be supported by the chief geoeconomics analyst, the geoeconomics team, and your recruiter to ensure you receive regular feedback on your work and help navigate the company.
AT A MINIMUM, WE REQUIRE THAT YOU:
- Are currently enrolled in a university with a graduation date of December 2026 or May 2027.
- Are legally authorized to work full time in the United States and will not require visa sponsorship now or in the future.
- Are available to work the whole duration of the internship from June 1-August 7, 2026.
YOU ALSO NEED TO HAVE:
- Demonstrated project, work experience, or coursework that shows your interest and knowledge in geopolitics, economics, and/or data science.
- Basic experience interpreting news, research, and other information sources and producing analysis and/or basic coding and data science skills.
- An understanding of international affairs.
- Proficiency in Excel.
- Familiarity with data analysis workflows, including cleaning, analyzing, and visualizing datasets.
- Passion, drive, and intellectual curiosity.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills, with high attention-to-detail.
- An ability to meet deadlines, logically tackle problems and set priorities.
- An ability to translate complex data into clear, written narratives.
WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE:
- Experience cleaning, scraping, or visualizing data using Python (e.g., Pandas, NumPy, Plotly) or R (Python preferred).
- Experience with SQL/Trino and other database query languages.
- Strong proficiency in a non-English language, with fluency strongly preferred.
- Experience in a geostrategically-significant region outside the US.
- Expertise in critical and emerging technology, political science, economics, military studies, international trade and investment, geo-economics analysis, or regional or functional areas a plus.
