WHY: To cultivate a pipeline of diverse talent for healthcare leadership who will serve to eliminate disparities in healthcare among vulnerable and minority patient populations.
WHO: Underrepresented sophomore (special consideration given to exceptional freshman) students possessing leadership skills, executive presence, strong written and verbal communication skills, and a minimum 3.2 GPA. Scholars from varying majors including the following are invited to apply: accounting, biochemistry, bio-engineering, biology, business, chemistry, computer science, economics, engineering, finance, genetics, health administration, health sciences, marketing, mathematics, molecular biology, nursing, pharmacy, physics, political science, pre-dentistry, pre-law, pre-medicine, psychology, or a related field.
APPLICANTS: Must be: (1) a citizen or national of the United States; (2) a lawful permanent resident of the United States; or (3) a person otherwise authorized to work in the United States and able to present proper documentation establishing employment authorization
PHASE I TOPICS: Behavioral health, health equity, health IT, health law, nursing, public health, public policy, socio-economic determinants of health, etc.
PHASE I ACTIVITIES: Etiquette Dinner, Financial Literacy, Meyers Briggs Personality Profile, Mock Interview with Chief Human Resource Officers, and Speech and Communication Training
PHASE I TOURS: Level 1 trauma safety net hospital, federally qualified health center (FQHC), leading medical research institute, urban core early education center and social service facility
PHASE I CULTURAL and TEAMBUILDING ACTIVITES: Escape Room at Historic Union Station, Kansas City Symphony at the Kauffman Performing Arts Center, Pinstripes, and Topgolf
PHASE I PRESENTERS: Presenters have included the following: Georges C. PHASE II INTERNSHIP SITES for HEALTHCARE LEADERSHIP: BHLI scholars have been placed at the following sites: Allscripts Healthcare Solutions, Inc., America’s Essential Hospitals, Atrium Health, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Children’s Mercy Hospital, Cone Health, Duke University Hospital, Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, Johns Hopkins Suburban Hospital, Novant Health, Polsinelli PC, Saint Luke’s Hospital, Truman Medical Centers, and Walgreens, among others.
Please submit your application by Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 11:59 pm.. Early submission is encouraged. Your app may be submitted BEFORE your letters of recommendation which are due by Wednesday, Oct. 18. Your recommenders will submit their letters on letterhead via email to bhli@blufordinstitute.org
